I see questions all day long talking about abortion. I don't understand this. It's an issue. That's just fine I just don't understand what exactly people (both pro-life and pro-choice) are trying to do when they ask a question like this. Most people have their mind made up as to which cause they are for and will not be convinced otherwise.
Is talking about abortion on this forum just about arguing?
Is it about getting your ego higher by feeling superior to others?
What is honestly the point of asking a question of abortion other then to stir up trouble and cause separation or hostility in the Pregnancy/Parenting section?

Emmaj: I completely understand civil abortion question. I don't, however, understand why someone would sit there and call all pro-life people religious nuts or all pro-choice people selfish brats. I just turns into stereotypical conversations. It's just such a heated topic and I don't undestand why people would want to rehash it over and over on a forum who has five or more quesitons a day concerning it.

Well maybe people who are pregnant are searching for options, abortion happens to be one of those options. So they are looking for information about it. Abortion whether you like it or not is sometimes a part of a pregnancy. If medical abortions can't be the topic of converstaion on this board then why should spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) be discussed because besides medical intervention in the first they are the same thing. Termination of a pregnancy.

The same reason people have debates. Although people may have their minds made up they may not have all the facts. For example, on an earlier forum, a gentlemans prochoice argument was that when abortions take place, its just a bundle of cells with no heartbeat. In reality, abortions can't be done untill 6 weeks, and the heart starts beating at 5 (along with the formation of arm and leg buds and facial features). He had a set opinion with the wrong information. Debating gives people a chance to have all the correct facts and then form their opinion from there.

I guess for the same reason you see the question "am i pregnant" about 50 times a day on here. Do we really know if someone is pregnant or not?
I asked a question about abortion just a few minutes ago myself but i asked why do people worry about what other people do. Why do people worry if someone wants an abortion? It is their choice not yours or mine.
If i wanted to argue i would do it in real. I am just asking a question and i can't help it if people cry on here when you do ask something. FYI if you don't like the question(s) don't answer cause it is that SIMPLE.
What is the point in it all about anything?

It's a topic people are passionate about. I mean, nobody would go on and on in an answer to a question like: "Do you like mustard or mayonnaise?" (I'm a mustard girl myself)
I think, judging from the sort of response that abortion elicits, it's a topic that won't go to bed easily and we'll be discussing it a good ten to twenty from now as well!

Some people feel a strong need to be right and to sway other people to their way of thinking. I've always suspected such people of having a criminal mentality.
One furniture salesperson I met years ago was out of jail and working at the store as part of a rehabilitation program. He got right in my face and was quite intimidating. He obviously had not lost his strong need to make people see things his way.
I learned from watching crime documentaries that youngsters who like to hurt animals often turn out to be criminals. Haven't heard anything about people who feel a strong need to impose their opinions on others, but I'm suspicious of them and try to avoid them.
And, to answer your question, I suspect the point is to have control. To beat the other guys into submission. To be the winner.

You know, honestly I think it's because the people who ask these questions have nothing better to do than stir people up, and the people who answer them either only want to make people MORE angry, or just get the 2 points for answering the question. Sounds like arbitrary futility to me, since like you said people generally have their minds made up already. By the way, thanks for the 2 points (just kidding ^__^)

I really do think it's just about starting an argument and then having the chance to give answers they don't personally agree with 'thumbs down'. Just to increase their own self-esteem.
The ones who have good intentions make it obvious by phrasing it civilly, as you say. The ones who ask things like "IT'S MURDER why won't you agree?" and equally "I DON'T CARE what you say try to convince me otherwise" are just asking for trouble.

You're so damn right about this.
Abortion is a POLITICAL bait , a pole of attraction to split people's opinions, and create 2 parties. People are gregarious, and like to be led like cattle...
Happy to be a loner and watch.
It is typically american mind. It is not an issue in England thanks Heaven.
