will the paint eat into the material?

yes the paint will eat into the material. I stupidly did this once when trying to spraypaint a peice of styrofoam yellow like 10 years ago when I was in the 3rd grade lol.

Yes styrofoam will melt if it is spraypainted. The combustible materials will also release toxic fumes.

anything can be done if you know how to do it .... yes ....your run of the mill spray paint does dissolve Styrofoams .... but if you hold the can at about a foot away and make quick passes only applying minimal paint ..... your foam will have very little or no damage at all ..... many coats will be needed to get total coverage ...use a latex base type spray paint if you can .... it can go on even heavier and do less damage

Depends on what kind of spray paint you use. You can buy Krylon's H2O Latex spray paint which is safe on styrofoam. I saw some in Home Depot just this week. Krylon also makes a Crafter's Spray Paint that is safe on styro, but I've only seen it in metallics.

Regular spray paint will dissolve it but as with anything there are specialty paints you can buy just for this purpose.

yes some will you might need to use a water based primer first but if you read the labels it will tell you if it is safe to spray paint foam..

you can spray paint styrofoam, it takes a long time to breakdown given the harshest of environmental circumstances.

yep, spray paint makes it shrink, but i still did it on a small float for a bilge pump

In most cases yes..... I think there may be a pain that is made for that but i am not sure...
