Two issues here;

1- Are the people in question BOTH going to do this or just one?
Sometimes it is best for the two to be able to talk to the same counselor, otherwise it THEN becomes difficult to coordinate counseling methods (e.g. one counselor says "have a quiet night on the town" and the other one says "take a weekend off from one anohter to re-evaluate")

2- Anyone can get online these days and it is so easy to talk to someone, but you never know who you are talking to. I find it very difficult to do some things on line and confusion is already present in this scenario.

All of that being said, it is ALSO great to be able to talk to someone about what is going on. The internet lends itself a certain 'anonymity' that these situations require.

I am a bit biased as I am the owner of an online counseling center, www.asktheinternettherapist.com, but I started the site specifically because I think that online counseling is a viable medium. I certainly would.
