I was just talking about this with my 81 year old father in law and he's seen them all. We both picked Joe Montana. That 2 minute drill to win the Super Bowl against Cincy...come on ! Joe came through in the clutch...all the time, every time !

I believe it is Brett Favre, and I'll tell you why.
History will find this to be true, and the only reason people say Joe Montana is because he is retired and in the hall of fame, etc, etc. I'm not saying that he isn;t a great player: he was the greatest of his time. I still think that my answer may be a swing vote between the two. Still, history will find Brett Favre to be the best QB ever, because he is the best general on the field the game has ever seen. He could take any group of players and make them great. Sure, he's old now, but back in his prime (aka 3 years ago or more) nobody was a better leader of his team.
He also will never have his consecutive start streak broken, which I give him props for. It shows his extreme passion for the game, and that makes him a special kind of player. To be great at your position, be an awesome general, have such passion for the sport you play, and win a Super Bowl, those all add up to greatness.
Now go ahead and laugh at me.

Dan Marino. I think it's stupid to say that someone is the greatest judged on the amount of rings they have. Super Bowls are won by the entire team and when you have no running game or defense, I don't care how good you are. You will be shut down in the NFL playoffs. Probably one game to sum up Marino's career is the New York game where it was like 49-48. He got a lot of stats but it isn't your fault when you score 48 points. If you put someone like Marino on someone like Montana's team, he would win a ring. But Marino is the best because he still broke records with an average team.

That is a hard one. There are too many variables.
A case can be made for Y.A. Tittle, John Unitas, Don Meredith, Joe Namath, Bart Starr, George Blanda, Dan Fouts, Roger Staubach, Bob Griese, Dan Marino, Joe Montana.
Time played, service rendered, opponents, length of season, locations of home field. All are factors.

The guy above me does not even have The Great John Elway in his list? That is a crime. Elway was the Best with Montana a close second. Elway did it with WR that were no names with the exception of Rod Smith. Look who Montana had to throw to.
