The great thing about Dungeons & Dragons (and all role playing games, for that matter) is that only one person needs to know the rules. That person would be the Dungeonmaster and that person acts as referee and guide for all the other players.

The best way to learn about role playing would be experience. Find a game club or game convention near you, explain that you are a newcomer interested in learning and just dig right in.

There is a basic set from TSR which would set you back about twenty-five bucks: http://www.hasbro.com/default.cfm?page=ps_results&product_id=17898 It is available at any hobby store. For starters you may want to look at Steve Jackson Games' GURPS. It is a role playing system that is designed to be adaptable to *any* genre: Fantasy, super hoeroes, mythology, science fiction, etc. You can download GURPS Lite, a free starter version, here: http://e23.sjgames.com/
