Whenever I read a news article that talks of people dying, I usually don't see it as particularly depressing but when an animal dies, I feel much more depressed.

As humans we are at the top of the food chain, and are responsible for much of the animal death that occurs. We use and abuse animals and treat them as disposable. They are innocent victims in Man's destructive ways.

Because we imagine animals as guiltless and therefore that when something cruel happens to a person, suppose maybe they had it coming and view it in a basic competitive way. It's also because regardless of religous view, most people feel we have a responsibility or stewardship of the earth and all life forms on it, and that somehow we can play God and save the life of any animal if we so wish. People cared more about donating money to thetrust fund of orphans of a mountain lion shot for killing a joggger, than to the trust fund for the jogger's children, that is sad.

When a person dies, it is because of old age, disease, war, murder, or something like that. No matter what, there is always a reason for their death. If that person happens to be on the other side of the world, then that reason, is unknown and impersonal to us, but we can still accept it as being present.

Animals on the other hand do not fight us for money, food, land, or oil. As such, their deaths and/or suffering are without reason, or at least can not be rationalized.

(Or, more likely, it is just be because animals are cute and fuzzy.)

Because the animal has usually been treated badly by a human and is helpless to stop them. An animal cannot help itself as we humans can. We feel sorry for them because of that.

Good question. I think along those lines every time I see one of those bumperstickers that reads,"I BRAKE FOR ANIMALS", wondering whether the driver of that car is as vigilant about people.

Because people are stupid and they get what they deserve. Animals are innocent creatures who have to live in displaced environments because of our ignorance.
