Some of the vowels are sounded differently. I can't give you a generalised explanation; it all depends on the word.
Two examples:
Americans say "can't"; Australians say it more like "cahn't"
Americans say "last"; Australians say it more like "lahst"

i think that its just the vowels (they are more stressed in Australia)
