So basically, a psycholgist and a therapist are sort of similar. Therapist helps people with their problems. Does a psychologist do the same thing or do they do research and write reports.

A psychologist is someone who got their PhD in an area of psychology. Anyone who does not have their doctorate in psychology cannot technically call themself a psychologist. Therapists MAY be psychologists (therapy is merely a part of psychology!), but many are Master's level as well.

A therapist is anybody who provides psychotherapy, whether it be a counselor, marital therapist, pastoral counselor, or psychologist. Psychologists are therapists, but they are also licesned to administer psychological tests, make a diagnosis, and (in a few states), prescribe medication for mental illness. Psychologists also have extensive training in research methadology.

one is a certified Doctor and the other has training in the field. Only a psychiatrist can issue meds, a psychologist can't. All 3 basicially help people with trouble of the mind in the end

Good question. I'll have to ask my father, he has his doctorate in psychology, but his job is a family counselor. Maybe you have to have a psychology degree to work in the therapy field? I do remember asking him years ago what the difference was between psychologists and psychiatrists and he said psychiatrists can prescribe medicine and psychologists can't.
