Earbuds, like the ones that you get with your iPod, are the worst for your ears, as they don't mould and build up wax and gunk in your ears.

The best are the noise cancelling head phones as they cover your full ear and block out any un wanted sound. One catch, good ones are $100+

best headphones use to be very comfortable ,very big and distant use to be more from ear, example sony mdr-f1,sony mdr-sa1000 and worse is very small size in-ear type headphones you need to insert them in your ear canal example sony mdr-ex71/81/90,creative ep 630,sennheiser cx-300 etc
