I just saw your notebook model and it has wifi builtin so you will only need a wifi router. Buffalo makes very good equipment so does Belkin. You can get a belkin wifi rtr at walmart which will not break the bank. Buffalo you can get at newegg which is a great spot to get anything electronic and there shipping and service is superb. here are some links to buffalo rtrs at newegg.

To set up a true wireless network that is very efficient you really need to think about how you are going to be using your laptop. Is it basically going to be stationary in one room or do you want to roam around the house and/or go outside ? Do you have structured wiring in your house ? If so you can set up several wireless routers as Access Points, one for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. There is a lot of signal loss when trying to communicate through several walls and/or floors. You also have to make sure that your wireless network will not be effected by any older model cordless telephones which may share the same frequency spectrum as any 802.11b devices.
