no,no,no. dont pay to fix it quite yet. this just happened to me a few weeks ago. go and get microsofts phone number for support. they will walk you through a few steps. then eventually they will ask for the manufacturers date which is on the back of your console. they know that they had a few bad systems get released and they are arawre of this. they determined mine was in fact a dud. they gave me a reference number and sent a prepostage paid empty box and the materials to box it up myself. all i had to do was pack it, seal it and call ups. they came and picked it up on Nov. 29 I received a brand new 360 Dec.7. they paid for everything and really made it hassle free.
you do not need a warranty for this.
take this step first before you do anything else.
hope this helps and i hope you get treated as well as i did.

This happened to a friend of mine last week. Microsoft knows there's a problem, yet refuses to issue a recall. MS told my friend to send them the xbox, then once they fixed it, they called him and told him it would be $140 for the repair. After about 2 hours of namecalling, lawsuit threatening and downright redneck butt chewing, he managed to get by paying $40.

Probably you can trade it in for a new one. I don't think you will have to pay. Maybe just like $10.
