My friend purchased an '04 or 05 cbr600RR as his first bike, and of course, he crashed it in the first week. $2,000 in damage right away!!!!! (600s are 4-cylinder, while most 500s are 2-cylinder)
For a first-time bike, I would STRONGLY recommend a Kawasaki Ninja 500R. They are cheaper to insure than 600s, cheaper than 600s, and you are MUCH less likely to crash because of too much power. If you don't crash the 500, you can sell it the next year for almost the same price you put into it. Of course if you crash the 600, you either have to fix it up, and STILL won't be able to sell it for what you put into it, OR you can sell it cracked up for a couple thousand less than what you paid for it. I have ridden my 500R for 3 years, and I still don't feel the need to upgrade to a 600 or bigger. I am sure it will suit me fine for another year.

It's a top bike, if well cared for. Good handling and brakes, enough power to kill yourself in about two seconds. Modern bikes are ridiculously fast, the CBR is plenty for anyone who doesn't have testosterone poisoning. For a fast bike it's very easy to ride.
