it used to be that women were only housewives. the men were the ones who went outside the house for work. the women was to be a wife, mother, homemaker, etc. take care of the family and the food. the women had to fight for their rights long before the 1920s but that was a major movement that showed that women are equal to men. women didnt have that equality before.

It took the suffragette movement to get women the right to vote. The constitution stated, "all men are created equally" and that was taken literally.

Woman were not equal to men. Men were supposedly smarter and woman could not handle making choices about goverment.
