im looking to purchase a .76 carat diamond... near colorless, ideal cut, princess cut, no visible infractions... the store i want the setting from is charging me $4400 for the rock... ive seen similar rocks at other stores for as low as $3500 so i take it there is quite a bit of markup on diamonds. the store im buying the setting from seems like they are willing to haggle on price, so im wondering if anyone here in the jewerly field could tell how much markup there is on diamonds/what they pay for them so i have an idea of how low i can try to get them to go

I'm pretty sure it's a huge amount. I just bought an engagement ring less than a month ago...1.11 ct, colorless, excellent cut, sI1 (GIA certified) for the center diamond. The platinum band had almost another ct, so basically a 2ct ring. The store listed at $15,500. When all was said and done, I was able to haggle 50% off the price!
Good luck buddy! And shop around--please take your time and you will find exactly what you want!

Go to a local jeweler that you trust! One that doesn't advertise and not a chain!! Department stores have low quaility diamonds that are tiny!! Your trusted jeweler will sell you a quality diamond so that you will come back for a lifetime. Always choose Color and Clarity over size!!! A beautiful diamond will shine twice as big looking if it is quality. People will notice a high quality diamond on someone even if it is smaller than a large barely sparkly diamond that looks like glass.

It IS okay to buy vintage estate pieces on ebay. You can often find huge value on vintage diamond jewelry, really quality diamonds that are not just microchips like today. Stuff that sparkles when you stand away. Thats how I determine clairity of a diamond, the further you move away from it; if its a great diamond you can still see it 10 feet back.

My local jeweler knows what price he has to rebuy the diamond so he wont go any lower than that. But if you are a repeat customer they will usually give you a discount.

My husband had a friend who was in the business of buying diamonds for a famous name jewelry designer { David Yurman} in NYC. He said that the mark up can be as high as 500% . I would recommend that you get an independent appraisal. Any reputable jeweler should agree to that.

Diamonds in shops are marked up at least 2 times their value and sometimes more.

You will be very disappointed if you try to resell that diamond right now.

Caution: do not buy diamonds on line, especially from Ebay

you should probably try a chain jewelry store at a mall where you could get a ring like that for as low as 2 grand or so. Chains buy in bulk so the mark up isn't as high as independant or family owned stores.

Around 100%.

Check Amazon diamond prices to see what the bottom line is around.
