If you live in a big city or even a just a city with a decent localmusic scene there should be plenty of alternative magazines that will have musician ads. Also, try Craig's List. I live in Orlando and there is no lack of musicians or gigs. As far as the ego thing goes, being egotistical may actually help propel a band to a good career. Also, realize a good career may be having 3-4 gigs a week and you will most likely still have to work a different job just for bills. But isn't music all about entertaining? Love what you do.

Take your own equipment, invest in karaoke, and spend the money. You never have to worry about the bass player drinking too much, if the drummer will show up, and the singer dealing during breaks at gigs. If you don't show up, you don't get paid and you'll be motivated to do so since you're self-employed. You don't have to practice and you get to keep all the money at the end of the night.

I've done this, can you tell?

A lot of bands go in liking each other, then they break up and hate each other. Put a group together where everyone hates everyone else.
