Children used to love getting coal from santa.

Coal has many uses:

Most prefferably, children liked to keep warm in the winter months. They would throw the coal into the furnace.

Other ways children used coal was in art, school pencils, and even in make up base.

Plus, if they ever over dosed, they could drink the charcoal and it would serve medicinal purposes.

Santa knew what he was doing in giving out Coal.

Now a day's,

Children use coal as sidewalk chalk
war paint

& most commonly while firing up the bbq grill.

-We wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year.

Be good or Santa may just bring you coal this year.

seriously, i wish he'd bring me some coal, because heating a house is expensive right now!

but, i think that stems from when men used to work in coal mines all day and come home covered in soot and dirt. coal wasnt appealing to kids, so parents would tell them the santa/coal story to keep them in line.

Because, if your good, over time that piece of coal will turn into a diamond.

You may have been bad now, so here is a piece of coal, and if you do good, then that peice of coal will turn into a diamond.

Because they deserve it...

In some European cultures, there's a bad Santa (Knecht Ruprecht in German) that comes around with St Nick on a special day and he gives them sticks and crap, too, if they've been bad.
