I'm going there in a couple of weeks. I want to know about the attractions, people, cities, areas to visit and not visit, the natural beauty, etc.

And please, don't say things like trailer parks, hillbillies, or git-r-done. Most of Alabama is not like that, I'm sure.

Actually, the most picturesque places are thick with rednecks/hillbillies. You'll just have to accept that as a part of life. However, if you skirt the small college town of Auburn, you might see some really lovely country scenery--there are lots of decaying barns and wooden or stone/concrete structures covered with kudzu that remind me of something out of a quiet horror novel. Lakepoint Campground in Eufaula is also particularly nice and I have heard it is extremely good for fishing. There is also the rising altitude as you approach Birmingham from the south; from Hwy. 280 you can see amazing drops and white cliffs...really nice, but be careful of the other drivers! See Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island as well--a real Civil War fort you can walk around in and look out onto the bay from the battlements (even has unexploded ordnance!). I also visited the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville long ago; it was great fun, and it must have expanded since 1984! The Enterprise Space Shuttle is there now, I believe used for Space Camp training.

Once place you DON'T want to drive in is Tuscaloosa. Everyone I knew there had either been in, narrowly escaped or had seen awful traffic accidents. While it has a lovely botanical gardens and the Black Warrior River is pretty nice, beware of the ill-designed traffic system! I'm sure there are parts I've missed, but I haven't been everywhere in Alabama. It has its trailer parks and rednecks, but then again, so does everywhere.

The people responding to your question must have never have spent more than a nanosecond here.

We moved to Birmingham from Chicago and were really surprised at what we found. Beautiful scenery, welcoming people, and a surprisingly cosmopolitan scene with great restaurants and arts.

We've done some exploring here, and found lots of cool stuff. Birmingham has a great civil rights museum, etc. Huntsville has a cool space museum, and Mobile is a neat town.

During spring summer and fall, it's a really beautiful state, wth lots of lakes, rivers, and coastline. A really cool place is the Litttle River Canyon near Gadsden.

I'm not sure about the attractions- I've not traveled through Alabama much, but I know there's the NASA Space Center in Huntsville. I have family there, though, and I can tell you that the countryside is absolutely beautiful. I live in Georgia....

Hope you Enjoy your trip!

what part of the state? Huntsville is a NASA area. There is a gulf coast in Alabama. And of course everything in between.

If you say it backwards, it kind of sounds like I'm a balla' (Ima balla). Jokes aside, I've heard Alabama is beautiful. Check Wikipedia.com, cause I ain't gonna do it for you. I say ain't even though I hate the word cause you're bound to hear it down there- It is my job to condition your virgin ears. Good luck!

In Birmingham, they love the Governor.
Now we all did what we could do.
Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?

I have friends that live in Alabama, and I guess there is a big NASA facility there.

There are some really gorgeous beaches there, on the gulf coast. Not too sure if the weather is nice enough to enjoy them though...

I've mostly only driven-through, but I did visit the Redstone Arsenal once, and it was pretty interesting.
