HA! Make them work in the lunch room, serving food, and wearing a hairnet!

That is a stupid punishment for high school, although I suppose it does serve it's purpose. The students will think it is a waste of their time, so they'll obey the rules in order to keep their free time. But I still think it is a bad high school punishment, I could see elementary school, but not high school. I know at my school, an after school detention is usually one hour and you have to be doing school work during it, otherwise you get more detentions.

Detention Ideas

well, the antonio banderas movie, take the lead was based on a real life dance teacher...detention was ballroom waltzing classes...and there are something like two hundred (?) schools in ny now having some type of dancing program. maybe something like that...
also, i figure kids ought to really understand the consequences of what they do...if they make a mess, vandalize, or whatever, the janitor should not have to clean it up...they should be made to do it, and a little more for good measure. i don't believe in school spankings, but a little public embarrassment can be a good thing...especially if they know before hand what will happen if they do certain actions. good luck with your project!

Our high school has a Planning Room. It is like a detention room but if a student gets sent there, they have to write a plan. In the plan they have to write a paragraph telling what they did (taking responsibility for their own actions). They have to think and write how their actions effected others. In the plan they have to evaluate their wants, like what do they want from the situation and is what they are doing helping them or hurting them in getting what they want. They have to write what they are going to do different to change behavior (make restitution-make it right). In the plan, they also have to anticipate what the logical consequence will be if they do not follow through with their plan. It seems to work pretty good at our high school. Students also have to keep up with the classwork they are missing while they are in the Planning Room. Students do not get sent to the Planning Room very often because they try to be responsible for their own actions and also know how to be respectful. Students have to report to the Planning Room from free periods and the class they were kicked out of until they get the plan done and meet with the teacher to get plan approved.
Hope this helps you with your student handbook project.

Here are some good ideas below:

-Mandatory volunteer hours served at the school
-2 page paper on a random topic concerning current events
-Must help create a lesson plan with a teacher for a class

...well i don't know how creative this is but one of our principles will actually make you choose between detention and old fashion swats with a paddle...

...I actually thought that was illegal but now I'm not even sure, luckily I haven't had to choose.

...oh and theres also the one that makes you clean all graffiti in the school.

our detentions were an hour before school started! Having to get up that early was so much worse than staying after!

i used to have a teacher at school that at the beginning of the year made me choose my own punishment, being the person i am i said "fine I want to play soccer everytime I get into trouble", to my surprise she agreed and everytime i got into trouble i went outside and played soccer. What i didnt know was that i played soccer no matter of the weather conditions or time. Long story short by the end of the year I had a killer volley but I was so sick of soccer.

We have TIPS. I don't know what it means, though. It is in-school-detention. Whenever someone is in TIPS, the whole school knows, and you do NOT want the whole school to know. Also, in TIPS we have quadrouple homework- which you end up haveing to take home. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR PROJECT!
