i have a wool peacoat that i've had dry cleaned, but it didnt really seem to get it quite clean. i know the directions say to dry clean only, but does anyone know if you can wash it yourself using a gentle cycle or by handwashing? i dont have any experience with wool clothing... thanks!

Do not wash it. Even if the wool doesn't shrink (and it will) the lining most likely will not hold up.

I would take it back to the dry cleaners and tell them it needs to be cleaned again (for free of course).
But if that is not an option, many store sell those home dry cleaning kits that are used in the dryer. But by the time you buy the kit, it would be cheaper to pay another dry cleaner to do the job.

I would not recommend this, but you could try handwashing it in cool water with a wool detergent like Woolite, then rinse well, wring out excess water and hang it to dry. Whatever you do, do not put it into hot water, a washing machine, or a dryer. You may have a difficult time getting the coat back into the right shape, so carefully shape it when you hang it. Count on taking several days for it to dry.

Don't wash it, it will never look the same. If you're not happy with the dry cleaner take it back and explain what is wrong and ask them to do it again.
If it's a pea coat isn't it a dark navy? What did you spill on it that has caused it to look unclean to you?

The label says "Dry Clean Only" so that it won't shrink.

Try taking it to a different cleaners and ask them to spot treat or spot clean whatever area you're concerned with. It will cost you a little extra, but it's better than ruining you coat.

DO NOT WASH IT - splurge on the $10 dry cleaning bill, otherwise your coat will shrink terribly and be unwearable. Don't even try to handwash or delicate cycle wash it. You can with sweaters, but not with coats. Trust me.

Sorry, but it is wool- YOU have to hand wash it. Or, you can take it to the dry cleaners- I bet they do wool clothing! GOOD LUCK!

I wouldn't advise washing it. Really I think it would ruin it.
