You will not be a novice forever. Most people who enjoy their sewing will have their machines for years, I sew all the time and make all clothes, curtains, lounge covers etc and I have only ever owned one other machine other than the one I have now. Look for something that will do a good buttonhole. Has a few attachments, and not too many fancy stitches as you will find you probly won't use them unless of course you want to make a lot of baby and girls clothes. Don't buy too cheap, and make sure you have a zig-zag to do seam edges. Most brands are pretty good, go for a well known brand like janome or brother or the swiss ones, huskvana etc.

just about any machine is ok. just get one that doesn't have a "ton" of extra stuff. you really don't need 100 stitches, etc. all you need is basics with a few stitches. if you are gonna buy used, i would look for a sewing machine repair shop that has some of the older machines that weren't so complicated. i am an experienced sewer, and my machine is 30 years old. it works great and there is a lot less to go wrong with it. one word of advice, avoid the singer touch-n-sew. i had 3, they all broke. these machines don't seem to hold up. they are real touchy. good luck, and enjoy. sewing is great!

I love my Singer. I got it at Wal Mart for under $100 and it works great. When I was little my mom and Grandma taught me how to sew on my Grandma's old Singer and that's what got me to buy that brand. Mine isn't the Touch and Go as stated in the answer above. I have had mine for 3 years already and no problems. Happy Sewing!!!
