1450 America was vastly different that 1914. American trade route in the late 15th century were based primarily around places that you could get to via waterways or by foot. Until colonization, Native Americans didn't really have much access to horses making trading over long distances more difficult. Once colonization took hold, trade with Europe became much more prevalent. This was a country of cheap products and the land to support them whereas Europe was full of consumers who wanted them. With the colonization of the Americas, cotton, tobacco and sugar became readily available to most people.

Once the steam engine was invented and implemented in boats and trains, trade across the country became much more prevalent. Not that it hadn't been prior, but during the settling of the West you took as much as you could carry across the Plains due to a lack of readily accessible items. There were a few stops along the way, but that was mainly to stock up on dried goods. You also have to remember that this coincided with the Industrial Revolution which allowed for mass production of some goods which made them more readily accessible to the expanding middle classes.
