As soon as I turn the car on, the lights are on. There's an off switch, but it doesn't actually turn the lights off. My car didn't come with a manual, and I've heard there was some tricky way to get the lights off. It's just really annoying when I'm parked somewhere and can't turn the lights off while I wait. Any clues? It's a 99.

You have a car that came with automatic daytime running lights. There is some not so legal ways of deactivating the lights. If you talking about just parking with the car running, just apply your emergency brake and your lights should go off as long as your actual light switch is off. Otherwise search for an anti-daytime light switch for your car. Good Luck

Pretty much everyone here hit it on the head. These are Daytime Running Lights (DLRs) and are required by Federal and Canadian law.
If you are just sitting with the engine idling, you can set the parking brake. (Why would you need DLRs (operative term RUNNING) if you can't move. The parking brake is the featured dis-abler.
If you are trying to PARK, or in a parking lot where headlights aren't needed, and in fact NOT appreciated (apartments, drive-ins etc.) you SHOULD be able to place the headlight switch in the "Park" position, and then only the park and tail lights will be on.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas

This is a GM car and comes with daylight running lamps it is normal for them to come on, it's a safety feature, however if they bother you for some reason there is a switch in a handbrake assembly that controls it which someone mechanically inclined can disable it, my suggestion is leave it alone and use hand brake to turn it off if you are on an undercover mission or something.

In my car, you have to pull the emergency brake to shut off the lights while you're sitting somewhere.

The two that have given me fits are the positioning motor and the positioning sensor. If the readouts are for the sensor, start with that one. You'll know right away if that's the fix.

Are the lights hard wired??
Check with a mechanic.
Someone may have hardwired your lights, which makes your off switch useless.
Put it into a auto electrician for a check.
