Is there a difference between Tivo and Dvr, if so what?

Also, do you have to pay a monthly fee with either? I have seen cable channels offer Dvr, but can you buy one were you do not have to pay the montly fee?

With your cable company your initial DVR box is usually a free service. With my company any additional boxes are only an extra $10 per month.

As for TiVO, the service is much better than a DVR. DVR technology is the base of TiVO's service but they offer so much more while your cable company only offers you the DVR. If all your looking for is some basic digital video recording than just go with your cable company as it is definitely cheaper. If you want more services, for example, with a certain TiVO service you can access your account over the Internet and set your TiVO to record a program. TiVO also has better search systems. My DVR only allows us to search by title of the show or movie, with TiVO you can search by favorite actors, directors, genre, etc... TiVO will also actually tape shows that they think you will like based on your other recordings. TiVO is far and above the better system but is more expensive. Last I saw they're running specials but before that a box was a couple of hundred dollars and the service was about $30 a month on top of your cable(but seperate).

Tivo is better than DVR because it is a stand-alone service. TIVO is TIVO's only service. What I mean is that the cable company offers a DVR as an add-on for an extra $10, but their primary function is the delivery of content.

TIVO's only job is to record the content you like. The service is very robust and getting better every day. When attached to a home network, it can also stream music and photos.

I just got TIVO and love it. The 80-hour DVR was about $67 and the service is $13/month with a 3-year commit.

Well worth it for what TIVO does.

Depending on what you are looking for the first person that answers your questions is right on target. I would also recommend DirecTV Tivo if you can get ahold of one or possibly one of DirecTV's new DVRs if not. The DirecTV's software is great (at least the software for their Tivo branded boxes), far superior to anything else (It uses the same software as the Tivo boxes). The service for me has been great so far. DirecTVs DVR's record 2 digital channels at the same time compared with Tivo only recording one digital channel and one analog (normal channels) channel at the same time. Digital channels give better picture quality. So it would be better than all if not most cable company DVR's also.

i believe your best option is dvr from dish network, it has many more functions than derctv or cable. dish network offers dual tuner dvr for the same price as a single, what this means is record 2 programs at the same time, watch 1 and record, operate 2 tvs verses 1, biult in picture and picture, store 100 hrs of recorded programs plus dish on demand service and home interactive services.
