When I first saw Nemesis it seemed very familiar:

Each has somebody from the past coming back for revenge

Each has a doomsday machine (though not its intention Kahn uses Genesis as such)

Each has the most logical thinking character giving his (its) "life" to save the lives of the rest fo the crew.

Before doing this he somehow "implants" a part of his mind into someone else (Bones and Pseudo-Data).

Is it just me or did Nemesis have the same basic plot line (with a few cosmetic changes) as The Wrath of Kahn?

(Though I still liked Nemesis, in my opinion no Star Trek movie beats part II)

Good points, I'd not considered how similar the tow are on a point-by-point analysis. I find it hard to disagree with you. I want to disagree with you... but can't find the logic in doing so. So, I'll have to admit that a number of themes in the movie are quite similar. I feel that there are still enough elements to distinguish the two of them, particularly the fact that the Picard/Shinzon relationship is quite different that the Kirk/Khan relationship, though both of the "nemeses" seem to have the same ultimate goal.

I had not thought of the similarities before, but yes Nemesis does share these elements.

However, Star Trek II was more memorable because Kahn, was known to the fans - great reference to one of the best episodes from the original series. Shinzu however had no prior introduction before this movie. They could have maybe thrown in one of the many Romulan characters from the series as a supporter or right hand man of Shinzu - Perhaps Tomolock (was Andreas Katsulas still alive when this movie was made?) or Natasha's half Romulan daughter (played by the same actress). Having one of these characters might have made the plot all the more sinister too.

The best Next Generation film is still First Contact, although the starship battle scenes in Nemesis are among the best of any Sci Fi movie to date.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when i watched it yesterday.

BTW, Data is a he not a 'it'.

Actually Data is a unique form of life and he exhibits many male characteristics, therefore he is a 'he', Is Spock a it because he isn't human?

geez... talk about a stretch... a few iffy similarities does not qualify as a remake...
a better question would be, was ST:The Motion Picture a remake of the original series episode 'nomad'?
