I just downloaded GIMP and I'm clueless. I checked on their website of tutorial but didn't find how to color the background. Like I pasted a picture and I wanted to color the white that was showing with a color. The only color is black. Do I have to download a color or something?

Just double-click on the foreground or background color to bring up the color editor. One way to color the white is to use the color-to-alpha filter to make the white parts transparent, and put in a colored background layer.
