The "holes" are specific places where the puck can pass by the goaltender, for example, the "5 hole" is between his legs.

The guy with the wikipedia link gave a great answer.

Though in "old school" terms it means five holes. One in each corner of the net (four) and one between the legs (five hole).
(hockey terminology has added two more "holes", as previously mentioned, one off the torso to the right and one to the left, basically a mid space between arm and leg)
