Because people need to sit on chairs. Chairs take up space aswell as the person. Also when a person is sitting, there body is taking up more room because there legs are out and all that.
It's like if you get a tall box of tooth picks. If you put them all up straight they will all fit in, but if you slant several of them, you will not be able to fit the rest in.

because if people sit, they take up more room (you have to account for the way they have their legs when sitting) but if you stand, about 2 people could stand in the place where 1 person could have sat.

Depends if you stack them. Then laying down would probably accomedate the most. I believe that the fire martials occupancy doesn't depend on sitting or standing, but over-all size and doors.

because your thigh area is horizantal while when standing, your whole body is vertical. the thigh area takes up extra space.
