Hmmm, actually .... being upfront and honest with her was the best you could do. I admire the fact that you didn't lead her on. Although she is hurt now, telling her the truth was b far the best thing to so.
Theres no real way to confort her, the affection she feels are something she has to get over all her own. What you can do is assure her that your friend is still solid and that you will still be the same towards her.
Hope that helps.

I am a girl and I can tell you that if a guy I had a crush on told me he liked someone else and then tried comforting me I would punch him in the mouth. You need to just back off and if the friendship isn't blown after time she will come back around.
I think you should leave her alone and let her sort it out.

Well, one thing is, you cannot force love. If you don't like someone, then you don't. And if you are forced to like a person, then it was never love. A good way to comfort her is to tell her how you feel for her. Tell her she was always a good friend, but you just never saw her as a girlfriend-type. Also tell her that since you guys are so good of friends, you don't want to risk your friendship. Because most times when couples break up, they tend to end up not talking to each other. So just let her know.

Joke around with her to make her feel better. Tell her that she's too good for you and list all the reasons why. Then just be her friend. Talk to her or find her some sexy guy to go out with to cheer her up a bit.

If it is just puppy love she will get over it, but from personal experience if it is more than that, you might end up losing her as a friend, think about it, if she really likes you and has to sit on the sidelines as 'friend'..and watch you be with another girl, it is going to kill her inside no matter how she tries to cover it up...a little advice? spare her feelings if you really dont want to be with her then you might just have to stop talking altogether

Don't comfort her. If you comfort her and she has a crush on you, her crush will only get worse and worse and you will only be hurting her more. Honestly, I've just witnessed this sort of thing first hand... Well, on TV, at least...

Just keep quiet about who you like. Don't mention it again is the best way to comfort her. Talk about other subjects.

inspite of telling her that u hav a crush on other girl???/....that means there shud be 2 reasons..1. she thinks ur really handsome and good guy whom she dosent want to miss out a life.
2.most probably this shud be the rite one...like she is not looking at wat affair u hav outside but she wants to maintain 1 with u ( secretly)...cos no girls want her life partenr to be some one else's before or after marriage...
she is into something..check her out.

tell her that you care for her as a friend but that you just don't think that you two are right for each other romantically. i'm sure she probably will still feel hurt and rejected, but maybe she won't feel like it is her.
