1914-1918
What caused the war was Serbia assasinated Austra_Hungary's leader. Austria which was the ally of Germany asked for aid to attack Serbia. And Serbia was the ally of Russia, so they asked aid from them.
There was the Triple Entente, which was the France, Britain, and Russia. And the Triple Alliance, which was Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy (which switched sides all the time) and I beleive Turkey. Each of these countries prepared for war since Germany and Russia prepared. And when a country begins this, other countries also prepare just in case they begin to attack them. At that time Germany didn't attack civilians, just the armies.
All was blamed at Germany for this cause. Who won? The Triple Entente's, which later on split along with the Triple Alliance.

Officiacially it ended in 1918. But we are still seeing the consequences today.
It spawned 3rd Reich, then WW2
Cold War - Vietnam War - Cuban Missile Crisis - US vs Russia vs China rivalry, India vs Pak (becos cold war rivals supported country which still crates hostility even today), Nort Korea vs South Korea Turkey vs EU Vs Greece etc etc.
All started or have strong links to WW1.

That's a tricky one because on paper it's generally 1918 but most historians agree that WW2 was actually a continuation of WW1 so technically the answer could be 1945.
