I'm proud of you! Good job wanting to go back to it for a good time and experience. This is just the way I view things, I'm very severe in my beliefs, but, I feel that any job is respectable. I don't care what it is. My mom once commented on somebody being *I feel like throwing up* 'just' a clerk. It is honest work, for honest money- nothing wrong with it at all. I just got off my shift at In-n-out, and I am very proud of being an assosciate there. I am considering getting a job as a waiter myself. People, yes, do look at it that way. But as for me? I say, "Don't judge someone by how they treat their equals but how they treat their 'inferiors.' " Quality people will have my same perspective and will never look down on a college student (or anyone) working as a waiter. They will talk to you like the human being you are. Good luck with pursuing your masters and forget what anyone may say or think about you.

What you're not getting though is that there's nothing more degrading than prostitution no matter how much they make. They're still selling their bodies and people are using them while on the other hand people who make minimum wage are just trying to support themselves. Prostitution isn't fun, it's painful.

Yes, its not a respectable job. But..Who cares?
IF you are in the right town and working for the right restaurant, you can make some significant money.
Back in the early 1990's I worked as a waiter in Chicago. I remember taking home at LEAST $400 a week in tips. Usually it was between $500-$550. IF you are good with people and have the gift of gab, go for it...

It's a well paying job with fairly flexible hours. And one that a person can get with little or no experience.
I've had a lot of friends who did this.
I don't see anything low class about it at all.
In my estimation anyone who looks down on a person in this job is a snob, and quite possibly having trouble with their own inadequacies.
Basically I don't think I'd care to hang around a person like this, I'd rather hang with the waitstaff.

I have to eat out about 800 meals a year and I rely on the Wait-person every time. Good service is something I really appreciate. Good service equals a good tip. You get cash every day. A good server at a good restaurant can make $500-600 a week. That's not bad.

I don't think waiting tables is a low respectable job. You can make some really good money in tips if you're good at it. Go for it. Who cares what anyone else thinks.

I do not view people that wait tables as if they have a low respected job. When I was going through college I was lucky enough not to have to work, working towards my Masters in Psychology was hard enough, good luck to you I hope it does not interfere with your studies

Not even. A good waiter is the key to a good dining experience, and definitely deserves high respect in the form of polite interaction and good tips. Carry on!

Not for a student, unless you're working someplace really nasty. It's a great way for a student to earn good money working relatively few hours. In fine dining places you can earn a lot of money!
Possibly they think you should be working or interning in something related to your career goals? Even if you wind up earning less, that can still be a good idea.
Either way, it's not really anyone else's business.
