I need to use a firewire(IEEE 1394) cable to edit a student movie, but my computer isn't compatible with the cable. Is there somthing inexpensive I can get to hook up to my computer, like an adapter. My camera has a port.

yes, a firewire card for a desktop PC is pretty cheap - do you have a desktop? indeed you should pay attention to a few important things. independent where from you get it, ask for a firewire card with a NEC chipset (this makes you less head ache). --- no VIA chipset please ---
how to install:
shut down the PC and remove the power cable. open the case on the side and insert the card in a free white slot (not important which one). make sure you seat it properly and fix the one screw on top. close the case, put in the power cable and start the PC. you will be notified "new hardware found". follow the instructions on screen. in case you have Windows XP you DON'T NEED the enclosed CD. XP recognises the new card automatically and installs the appropriate driver - done!

this is a pretty good and very cheap firewire card with NEC chipset

in case you have a laptop, you need another card
