Ok, to make it easier for you, i'll explain in a simple way. I have to write an agrumentive paper for my english final tues (the 12th). they gave us 8 topics to choose from, so I broke it down to four of them I can choose from. My problem is to think of at least 3-4 reasons why I agree or disagree with the topic I choose, that way I know what to write in my paragraph. I'll write down the three topics I chose and I just need 3-4 helpful main reasons to back up my agrument. Here they go:
1) Would our streets be safer if we had stricter gun control law? I agree.
2) Should the use of animals in medical research be prohibited by law? I disagree
3)Should gay or lesbian couples be legally allowed to marry in the same manner as heterosexual couples? I am on both sides here, to me it depends I guess.
4)Should assisted suicide be legalized in California? I am also on both sides here, again it depends on the situation.
Please, I need help with 3-4 reasons to back up my case.

The final is to be 1250+ words so it would help a lot if someone can give me good reasons why they would agree of disagree. It doesn't have to be long, I just need a topic sentence to work from.

1) Our streets would be safer if we could get guns off the streets. This would need to be done through law legislation (and you will hear loud protests from the American Rifle Assn. about their constitutional ammendments: address this) and an amnesty turn-in-your-gun program. There would be fewer teen suicides, as well as accidental shootings in the home if guns were banned. Too often we hear stories about a father getting up at night because he heard a noise, fired his gun in the dark, only to be horrified to learn that he hurt, or killed, his child unknowingly. Also, there would be fewer children gaining access to loaded weapons (why do people keep their guns loaded and in nightstands?). (You could talk about people's disbelief that something bad could happen to their family, etc.). Criminals will still have access to guns, but this will make it a little bit more work for them to obtain them, and hopefully they will get caught in the process.

2) I disagree with you on this one. Having worked in a med school for over ten years, with what I have seen, we should prohibit the use of animals in research. Experiments are performed over and over again ad nauseum. What about the animal's rights? Just because they do no speak English does not give us rights to maim and kill them.

3) Ask yourself why gay or lesbian couples should NOT be permitted the same constitutional rights as others. What right do people have to pry into others' bedrooms? Is it proper to start a morning conversation thus: "Hi Joe, Did you have great sex with a man last night?" and he says, "Yeah. How was it with your old lady?" Obsurd, right? Gay and lesbian couples are taxed twice on their houses because the states do not recognize their union as legal, they cannot get health insurance for each other or their adopted children, and are sometimes barred from the hospital when their life partner is dying. Is this right?

4) Holland is a progressive country in Europe and has assisted suicide as a legal option to end one's life. In fact, some Americans, that can afford it of course, fly their to end their life with dignity (esp. when they are terminally ill and in a great deal of pain). We afford this right to die to our pets (we do not want to see them suffer), yet currently deny it to our citizens. Sometimes doctors prescribe more and more morphine to relieve the pain, thus allowing the patient to slip into unconsciousness and pass away in peace.

Hope this gives you some ideas. Please use your own words and think about the arguments I have given to you.

Best wishes.

I think you need to decide either pro or con in order to make valid arguments. So I'll look at your #1 re stricter gun control
-police would have the right to enforce removing guns from those brandishing them
-it would consideraby lessen the chance of being an innocent victim of random gun shootings
-it would instantly cut down on the number of guns carried & perhaps used by people incapable of self-discipline i.e. those on drugs, alcoholics, rageaholics, metally unstable people
-people would feel safer and would feel more comfortable being on the streets day or night - which would enhance the quality of life of the citizens.

Stear clear of 3 and 4, because those issues can become very heated. Even thought the professor is suppose to be basis, if you say something that he doesnt like, you might lose points.

You agree because:
it takes away power from people who shouldn't have it/abuse it
since many people do not take gun operating courses, they dont know how to be safe with it
there will be less people using guns to solve their issues(gang violence etc)
less accedential misfires/kids using it to slove their school issues or personal issues
