It looks like the virus could be loaded in memory so cleaning up with an antivirus might not clean it up properly. Firstly start the computer in safe mode and run the virus scan. You can do this by restarting the computer and hitting the F8 button and selecting Safe Mode.
Another thing I would suggest is to turn off the messenger service, this is also known to be the cause of the restart, to do this click start and run and type in services.msc and click ok. In the Services windows look for Messenger and right click it and select properties and under the startup option select disabled and click on stop if you have the option.
Also you might want to do an online virus scan as your antivirus program could have been comprosmised by the virus. You can do this by going to the following site http://housecall.trendmicro.com and following the instructions.
To stop the computer from restarting while doing the scan you can do this, click start and run and type in shutdown /a and click ok and this will force the computer to not restart. (Note you run this command once you see the countdown for the shutdown)
Hope this helps

First, make sure the system is fully patched. If it is, and it continues to power off, then you probably have a damaged system file from a virus infection. You need to re-install Windows. Reformat your hard drive if that is at all possible. But be warned: You will lose *everything* on your hard drive if you do this! If you re-install Windows, you may have all your data files, photos, music, etc. but none of your additional applications (Office, purchased software) may work without having to reinstall that as well.

1) Run Defrag in Accessories>System
2) Run Freeware Belarc Advisor-It probably is a bad hard drive and there is a program on Internet, and Belarc Advisor (Ohter Diagnosis programs too) called SMART that will test your hardrive.- I would guess your hardrive is failing and will get worse! All hardrives are so-called SMART enabled.
3) Reinstall your operating system and select do not erase files if 2000 Pro...not all operating systems have this option at reinstall and won't hurt current files, but you have a Dell and probably no disk.

My first suggestion is to reformat the hard drive and re-install all the operating system and the software. Make sure you back up your own data first though.
Second option is to purchase a good AV program, run it and see if it finds other viruses etc. This may not be the solution based on your comments.
As long as you have the Dell recovery disks, I always find that re-formatting is the best and last resort if all fails.

well mine was doing the same exact thing with the dell that i bought. its not the system its a very intense trojan virus. the only way to make it go away is to redo your whole system. when you start it just keep pushing F12 (it may be different on yours)
then it will make a screen come up and you're going to want to just erase the whole system so in your 15 minute block its on print everything out that you will need.
good luck with this!

possibly it has collected dust on internal parts and needs to be cleaned out.compressed air works really well.dust acts as an insulater on electronic parts and causes them to over heat, which in turn would make the computer shut down so that they can cool.

could be overheating, if you notice you can't turn it back on for a while after it shuts down. Try seeing if dust is clogging some fans and such. Or Windows could be being windows again...
