are students made to say the pledge? i just want to know WHY. 'to be patriotic'???????? is that what people are going to say? or is it more like the shaping of young minds that aren't capable of thinking for themselves yet, to automaticaly love their country? who came up with this idea? why are students taught all these patriotic songs? i understand for veterans day, etc, but isnt this really TEACHING them to be patriotic? why are americans under the influence that it is america and only america that have these freedoms? Why don't people realize that virtually all the other countries in the UN have similar freedoms to us? all i want to know is why.

the people who died for our country? you mean the ones that died so our country can have more oil? the ones that died because they were under the false assumption that our freedom was threatned? the people who died because we can't mind our own business? yes i respect them. what i dont respect is our government who lead them to believe that.

Which question do you really want an answer for? Are you truly concerned about the pledge? You seem to be going for some type of conspiracy against young minds being patriotic. Then you add to my opinion by dragging the UN in to your question.
What point are you attempting to make? That the UN in some way guarantee other countries freedom? Or that other countries that belong to the UN have similar freedoms to the USA? At one time the UN had Libya in charge of human rights. Good idea - NO but does give you an idea of the UN's logic at times. The UN is also ignoring the refugee problems around the world - just as the ignored the slaughter of 800,000 people in Rwanda. So please get yourself another pilar to hold up as an example for your rant.

When you say the pledge you are swearing loyalty to the country, democracy, freedom, our ideals, and most of all, to your neighbors and fellow countreymen. The pledge promotes unity and a sense of common identity between all of us; that we all believe in what our country stands for. Many students don't know what the pledge actually means. Maybe they should do a little research before deciding it's meaningless. Refusing to say the pledge is refusing loyalty all these things, which may even include friends and family. Nevertheless, our country will allow us to refuse to say it without punishing us. You don't have to say it if you don't want to, but it would be respectful if you did.
The flag is not just a piece of cloth. It's a symbol of everything this country stands for. When I look at a flag I don't see a bundle of cotton fibers, I see the stars that remind me of our unity, and I remember the people who helped form this country.
The way I see it, if you choose not to swear allegiance to the country you live in, then you shouldn't be living there.

Ah, you poor misguided teenager. Do you really want to know why or do you just want to rant?
No, virtually all the other countries in the UN do NOT have similar freedoms to the US. Second, the flag is not just a piece of cloth. It represents the United States of America that gives you the freedom to ask this question without being arrested in the middle of the night and having your parents lose their jobs and home because of it. Try asking this in China, for instance, one of the major powers in the UN.
My uncle died for the country that flag represents. He didn't die in the current war, which has nothing to do with oil but everything to do with keeping us safe from a despot who thought so little of life that he gassed women and children to death in one of his own towns just to test the weapon's efficiency. He died in the hedgerows of France liberating another country from the hold of another crazy dictator.
Is it really so difficult for you to understand why people would want to show how much they love this country but honoring the flag it represented? There was a time in this country when most people would think this question a little strange as if they couldn't understand why pledging allegiance to the flag would be so upsetting to you. Too bad we've lost that feeling in the name of "thinking for ourselves."

First great question!!
But I have to agree with Wiltizzle its tought out of respect for those who defended this country Died for it/ Lived and carried on the stories of why and what makes this country Free. Please don't think that all Americans beleave that we are the only free country; but rather think of it as the Youngest Country; and fought for freedom at its youngest age of about 100years and most Mid Eastern , Eourpean,Asian, ect. have fought for 1000's of years and some are still fighting for freedom. I made my pladges in my younger years in school and I hope that the Pledge will continue to be tought and given because I Do Have Respect for those that give me my Freedom.

I think we say the pledge because it's out of respect....all the people who died to make the country what it is deserve it. I don't see what the big deal it...it takes like 1min and it's just something nice to do! Is it really asking that much. Think of all the people who died for this country do you really think they should just be forgotten?

Students aren't made to say the pledge. Before saying the pledge at our school they say "all those willing stand and say the pledge". That means free will is involved.

Do you think its unique to this country or something? Do you think its something new? How about having regular meetings to demonstrate your loyalty? Jeese, child. Get off it. Does it do you any harm?
Do you realize that in about half the coutries in this world you could be prosecuted for such remarks? In still many others it would simply assure you would never agian gain advancement in your employment? Be happy for what you have here instead of whining about something so trivial.
Why is it that children always think they have it so rough and that all trivial inconvienences are pointed directly at them. Grow up and get over it
