I'm currently 20 years old 5 foot 8 inches, and i'm 174 lbs. I'm a little overweight but i've been going to the gym regularly for about 2 months so i'm steadily losing it. My goal is to get cut, hopefully have a six pack by Summer (around Late May, Early June). Question is, are protein shakes a good idea for me? If so, what's a good brand of protein shakes etc...

They aren't good for your goals.

If you want to gain muscle mass then they are a good thing. If you want to get cut that's something else altogether.

To get cut you need to lose the body fat in all the crevices between the muscles, thus the skin stays contoured to the muscle, rather than the subcutaneous fat and the muscles are shown.

I would suggest something like hot rox or hydroxycut for getting cut.
