Russia having 611 per 100,000 . Why is it this country wants first and foremost to put people in jail . Some of the jails are filled with minor drugs possesors at a cost to society of millions per year. Is it just away to keep the poor off the street and out of our hair

It is probably related to the fact that we also have more law suits than other countries. We use law and courts to solve problems that in most places are handled other ways. If we were not rich we couldn't afford it, since for the most part we require humane treatment for prisoners. But this makes it easier to justify putting people in prison on minor offenses.

I agree that some guy selling dope is not hurting me and the cost to society is greater with him in jail than out. I think you are stretching it a bit by saying that this is some conspiracy against poor people.
The U.S. is not more harsh on criminals than many other countries though so don't use that data as some indication we are. Yes there are countries that have more liberal drug laws. If you look at these countries you will find that you can go to jail for preaching against homosexuality or saying something negative about a religion.
Let's legalize marijuana but using hyperbole is not going to convince anybody.

The only question is, why do idiots keep committing crimes? You know, it's pretty damn easy to stay out of jail, it's not like catching a cold.

Its a way of creating separation between law abiding citizens, and those criminals who posses a threat to us. If there was a way of having that separation where those criminals would not present a threat to my friends and family, without incarceration...and be cheaper...I would be all for it...

in some countries they don't put them in jail, they just shoot them or other ways of elimination
