What is the law about license plates on cars?

Do you have to have one on the front AND back, or just the front OR back?

I heard that you can have a novelty plate (like a cartoon or football team or some other sort of plate) on the front, but not the back. Is this true?

Thanks!

(By the way, I don't know if this makes a difference, but I'm from CA)

California requires front and back plates. I live in Arizona, and we only have to carry a back one.

Hope this helps!
