If you're that low on space, you'll never be able to install XP anyhow. You need to do some serious hard drive cleaning, or get a new one. If it's a desktop you can leave the old drive in when you put XP on the new one, and have all your stuff there. The old drive will also have all the drivers you might need when you do the install. You can even leave the old drive in permanently, reformat it and use it as a backup.

Why do u want to backup the data to switch the OS to genuine XP. MY suggestion is remove all temporary files and stuff like that. If you have some movies and stuff write them onto CD's or DVD's. Now depending on your system drives my suggestion is move all the data onto one single drive. Use the C drive to install XP and while installing only see that you format C: only, not the others. This way you can easily switch your OS. For a clean install you cannot actually expect to carry along all your settings and stuff. However, if you really want such stuff you can go to advanced options in backup tools and select only system state data... this will backup all the settings on your pc. My suggestion however is that you better dont do that and clean install your pc with genuine xp.

I always do my backups to DVD or CDs, just move all your pictures folders, mp3 music folders, movies to a "Backup folder" and try to burn CD/DVDs by pieces.
If you want to backup you emails, you can do so depending on which email client you've got, you'll have to check the help of it. Then you probably want to save your bookmarks.
If you plan to do a clean install of XP you'll need to reinstall all the programs you've got, however, you may still want to backup their configuration.
If you run out of space, you can use a little program called windirstat, from http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/ that will show your hard drive graphically, so you can check which files are taking a lot of space and see if you need them. Thanks to that program I actually found some temporal DVD images that I didn't need at the time and deleted them, freeing up to 15Gigabytes, enought to install 3 or 4 windows XP by partitioning.
However, If you already have windows XP and got the genuine windows XP, microsoft doesn't care about that, what it cares is that you bought the license, it doesn't matter where you installed your windows from. Also, if you bought genuine winXP, but got XP installed from a copy and got the genuine alert message, you could just clean that up. Again, what microsoft cares is that you have the license, the paper that say that you can use windows XP.

I can recommend you to use Acronis True Image for it. With this program you will be able to backup your entire PC. If you don't want to use your HD for storing there your backup images you can use for that CDs, DVDs, or any USB devices. Here you can read more about True Image: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
I like True Image because I don't need much time to set it up and it allows me to work while it performs backup tasks. After all True Image makes me fell calmly for my data.
