The above answers may also cause your battery to EXPLODE. I have seen it happen so if you choose to do that stay away from the battery. It will work though in most cases as long as it doesnt fry your cars wiring. Get a battery charger, take the alternator off the car and put on rubber gloves. Put your negative clamp on the positive terminal of the charger, then "ground" it with the positve. Plug your charger in an dont get hit by the sparks. it shouldnt take long at all for that to burn the diode rack out of it. Be ready to unplug an let it cool down. If your charger kicks off when you plug it in, take the battery out of the car and use jumper cables be sure to put something around the battery in case it does blow up, just dont do it in the car because you will be looking at serious wire damage to your car. If the cars old enough. start it and pull your positive battery cable off but dont let it touch anything where it can ground out. have someone hold it if you have to. Older vehicles will run off of the alternator alone once the car is started. Running too long this way will fry the alternator really good. ;) Also safer for you and your wiring.

Short the large power wore to chassis ground somewhere away from the altenator. Make it look like the wire rubbed on a sharp metal edge and shorted out.
