the reason for doing this is to make more money for a business. can an employer ask employees to do this. what laws does this break??

There is nothing legal about that. The employer absolutely can not legally ask an employee to do that.

it is legal, as long as those profits go back to the company, not to line the pockets of the boss. if it does that, embezzlement. If other stores are conspiring to do the same thing, Fraud.

that said, if one store decides to do this to increase it's revenue, that's between the store and the consumer. It's legal. the owner of a store can have his employees set the price at whatever he wishes to sell something for, unless he's contracted to sell it by a larger business, which often have set prices that an object is supposed to retail for. changing the prices on those is a crime.

However, on Ethics, it's wrong on every count. report it to the police to be on the safe side.

It depends on - where he wanted that manipulation to be done.
Ex: if he wants to correct sale price from $ 14.50 to $ 145.00 its is his discretion. If he wants to manipulate the total of a Bill, it is not legal.
