Oh gee email is so much more economical and what is wrong with him calling you? Can't he call once in a while
YOU mention that he lives across the world when do you ever get a chance to see each other. I don't know how you do it.

Does he have Internet access? You could use yahoo messenger with voice, PC to PC is free, worldwide. If no high speed on his end, PC to landline U.S to Tokyo is currently $0.019/miute. (less than 2 cents) and Bangalore is less than a dime per minute.
Check out skype.com, it free PC to PC calling, worldwide, and until the end of 06 it's free PC to mobile and free PC to landline. Is also very cheap afterward.

if you and him have a computer PC or laptop, you can talk to him for free on Yahoo instant messenger with voice, you will save a lots but you have to figure what time to meet online so he know when to get on, time different depend on what country he in

There are free softwares you can install on your computer so you can talk with each other. You just need a headset with mic
