It sounds like the thermocouple is bad.

If the pilot stays lit then the thermocouple is OK check to see if gas valve is switched from pilot to the on position if the thermostat is a manual it has a heat anticipater setting that can be found on newer furnaces on the wiring diagram on one of the access doors, if the thermostat is programmable then there may be a switch to set from electric to gas. But you should call a licenced technician , a gas furnace is made up of several safety switches that if bypassed can cause a fire . Just remember when working with gas appliances a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

If it's a new furnace or built within the last 5 years it should have a diagnosic lite thatwill flash a code to tell you what's going on sounds as if either a safety switch is open or the combustion fan motor is not making the proof switch to the circuit board. If the furnace doesn't have the flash lite to indicate the problem then you will need a service man to troubleshoot the problem with a VOA meter. I don't recomend doing this yourself it could get Hazardous....

could be the thermocoupler. it is a five minute repair job. it is the little tubing that runs to the pilot light.

Like most has stated...it sounds like the thermocouple needs to be replaced.

replace the thermocouple. It's easy you can find directions on the internet.
