I was just thinking of Voltaire when I saw your question. Voltaire summed it up quite nicely. What kind of country are we living in when are not allowed the freedoms of expression and speech? Even if I disagree with what is said, we should still have a right to say it. Unfortunately, many people choose to use this freedom to spread vitriol.

Becaouse people as smart as Voltaire realized that like life we must take the good with the bad. The whole philosphy beyond freedom of speech is that the truth will be heard regardless of who says it. Perhaps the truth has alredy been said or not. Maybe you will like the truth when it is finally revealed maybe you won't, but freedom of speech will insure that it is heard. This is something the founding fathers realized thats why it is the first ammendment.

The ability to speak unfortunately is not tied to intelligence. Some people pride themselves on their ignorance and others just like to hear the sound of their own voice.

If we are to believe in free speech we have to believe in the freedom of people to say whatever they want to, even if some people label it as stupid. I believe I know who you are talking about, and they are actually very intelligent

There are a lot of stupid ignorant people in the world. Part of their stupidity is not knowing when or how to shut up.
