i know it's a bundle of nerves but what does it do exactly? does it just take up space?

The clitoris is the only part of the human body whose sole function is pleasure and therefore sex. It has over twice the number of nerves (which lead to sensitivity) than a penis.
Carresing it helps getting pleasure, aroused, and links to the lubrification of your vagina to make penetration easier.
When aroused, your clitoris will sweel with blood (close to what a penis does actually), but it's not just to take space.
Always teach your partner to caress you there and how, you'll have more chances of reaching an orgasm.

The clitoris, thru its ability to be stimulated and provide a pleasurable sensation to the female, serves the function of reinforcing the females' tendancy to want to engage in intercourse, thereby improving her chances of reproducing and carrying her genes onto the next generation. You do not pee through it, that's just wrong. Although it is located near the urinary opening. It's for sexual pleasure, orgasm. Perhaps you should get a book like OUR BODIES, OURSELVES. I gave one to my daughter when she turned 11 or 12.
