make sure you have a low-flow showerhead. You can also put a jug of water or something else to displace water in your toilet tank (already mentioned). Basically, shut off the water when you're not actually using it. That means, while brushing your teeth, while washing dishes, etc. Wash only full loads of laundry (also saves on gas/electric), and if you have the money (which I sure don't), buy a front loading washer. You probably don't get much rainfall if you are saving it for the lawn, but you can keep containers out to catch what you do get to water plants later.

you probably know how to save water in your house i.e washing of dishes, bath, toilet, washing clothes. you can at the most minimise your water usage. whatever you are doing now you are not wasting water or rather you are utilising water in the house appropriately. the water used outside your house for plants is the culprit. when you water the plants, lots of water is lost due to evaporation i.e. when u water the plants water is definately wasted, so what you will do?1) well rotten farm yard manure or oil cakes have a capacity to hold water apart from other great qualities, use them in plenty no side effects 2) add peat this also has water retention capacity. and the most important of all do mulching by adding or spreading dry grass, hay, or leaves near the roots this will prevent evaporation loss. if you cover it with black plastic then it will save tremendous amount of water ofcourse the growth of plant will be enhanced. for your lawn only f y manure and peat should be incorporated in the soil

You can put a brick in the back of your toilet, it displaces some water and saves 1/2 gallon per flush. You can also buy water saving shower heads. And, don't let the water run while you're brushing your teeth - wet your brush and then turn the water off until you are done.

Wash dishes the old way...soapy water in one large basin and rinse water in another. The basins don't hold as much water as a sink does, but it's still enough to do the job. Even if you change the water when it gets dirty, you're still using less than if you rinse the dishes under running water.
Filling a half gallon milk jug with water and a few stones and putting it in your toilet tank works well, too.

Good Luck!

most water companies give washers and shower heads that use less water, also you can get a bag to put in the toilet tank to keep level high for flushing but it uses less water,
