Tech A is right and the diameter is .500 inch. 13 refers to the amount of threads per inch.

A bolt with a designation of 1/2 - 13 UNC means this bolt has 13 threads per inch, which is a very course thread. The clue is in the letter following the bolt size. NC standing for national course and NF standing for national fine.

in some cases, a standard bolt and a metric bolt will thread onto the same nut, but one will be a little sloppy/loose on the nut. anyway, the simple solution is to go to the hardware store and try a standard 1/2"-13 thread per inch bolt, and try a 13 mm metric bolt. most hardware stores will have a thread checker. it is a little set of indexed teeth that fit into the threads on a bolt to determine the threads per inch. i guess the simple answer based on what you asked is this 1/2-13 means it is standard bolt, 1/2" diameter with 13 threads per inch. the -13 means tpi, NOT mm.
hope this helps

No, you're not.

Seems to me it's a 1/2" diameter bolt with 13 threads per inch (in length). That sure couldn't be considered a FINE thread.

I'd go with Technician A. Sounds like something from an ASE test. Your supposed to select the BEST answer, so I'd go with that.

1/2 - 13 unc = 1/2" dia. x 13 threads per inch united national coarse.
13 millimeters = 0.510" which 0.010" larger than 0.500" = 1/2" thus a 1/2 " unc nut would not fit. Conclusion, tech a is correct
