i have a compaq presario desktop. when i use it it worked fine for like about 2 hrs but then it just froze on me. then i tried rebooting it, but it took like 20 times bfore it actually turned on again. the cpu turned on but the monitor didnt, the green light turned on for about 2 seconds then it would change to orange. i bought a new hard drive. bcause for some reason i thought that would mayb have somethin to do with it but i thought wrong. it kept doin it. then i took it to a repair shop. they told me that the cpu has to be in a well "ventiladed area" since the computer was made to run on win. me. but i had upgraded it to win. xp..so that the cpu. only ran on 800mhz..and it really couldnt keep up with XP. i tried it but...it worked well for about a week.. then it froze on me again..the same problem again..DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT MIGHT BE THE REAL PROBLEM WITH MY COMPUTER??should i just sell it??how much would someone be willing 2 pay 4 a compaq presario with 100 gig hd.512 ram.DVD/CDRW

I am suprised the repair shop did not suggest installing a fan, the old computer probably has minimal cooling. This would correspond to the "Well ventilated area" the problem sounds heat related.
You will not get much for your 6-7 year old computer.
I suggest blowing out the dust with canned air (never a vacuum cleaner) and see if there is a place you can add a $5 fan in the case.

Computer Guy, above is correct. It is a heat related problem. I know exactly what you are going thru, I had the same thing happen to me about a week ago.
Either buy a small fan, cool off that processor, or like I did, just set a small area fan to the side of your computer, and angle the fanblades into the venting slats, but I would not put direct fan wind onto it, because there's alot dust too, to consider. My fan blow just a bit to the side of these slats, but enough cooler air enters, keeps me processing!
Good luck (by the way, this saved me exactly $926.42, the price I'd have paid last Sunday at BestBuy. Instead, a 12.00 fan

If it is over heating, I would clean it out real well. Next I would get a new power supply. Then boot into safe mode do a chkdsk in the DOS mode. Re-boot the computer then do Virus scan. The reason I said new PSU is because by now the old one has to be old and week. For a side NOTE: IF you choose to sell the computer compare prices on eBay for what others are selling there computer then make a choice off from that..

firstly, get rid of your comcrap, Uhm, I mean compaq... second, get a dell!!
There are actually SEVERAL factors of why this could be happening. first, there could be a glitch in the hard drive... second, your power supply unit could be bad... third, the fan inside might be going out... there are several other things it could be... my suggestion is, get a new computer, rather than spending more money trying to fix it to only have it happen again. I had a comcrap and finally got a dell.

After examining all those different solutions, it happened to me that the subject could o.k. don't have something to do with the OS, viruses, or any of that different nonsense. purely placed, it ought to in all likelihood be a concern such as what I had some time in the past. i became into experiencing the same hassles, the only element i ought to do became into to close it down and attempt returned later Lo and behold, i desperate to get a bigger complicated force sooner or later, I put in it and the subject disappeared. WHY? It seems that the subject became into that the HDD became into at fault. A techie instructed me after finding out it, that a capacitor (a thingie that holds a cost for a definite length of time) interior the HDD became into not functioning and consequently it became into overheating and closing itself down. answer: Get yet another HDD, deploy the OS, deploy all your backups and/or reinstall any classes or video games you prefer. a brilliant number of artwork, yet on the different hand, a comp. is barely slightly bit hardware, it could and does injury down by using no fault of your guy or woman. ;-)

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
