just adding to everyone else's answers. The trade deficit has been going on for decades. However, given that the dollar is currently weaker towards currencies such as the British Pound and the Euro, the U.S. trade deficit has a chance to deflate.

If this weakness continues, American products become more attractive internationally while international imports will be more pricey for us. This, in turn, helps to shrink the current trade deficit.

Did you say recently? The U.S. has had a trade deficit for the past 30 years. We import much more than we export. Our main export is U.S. jobs. Lets not forget the latest trade agreement. That genius George W. traded nuclear tech. for mangos.

It sounds more feasible to say that, if a trade deficit takes place, it would be because the U.S. imports more goods than it exports.
