Saw this beautiful fish at my local petstore. I've got a 30 gallon tank that's empty, and I've bred fish before. I love this fish but there is hardly any websites about this different breed. Any info you could share?

Tilapia Butikoferi are extremely aggressive large west african cichlids. Since they get upwards of 12-15 inches, a 30gal would be sadly inadequate (a 90gal would be considered small for this particular species). They're also highly capable of demolishing any other fish kept with them.

If you happen to have a 125+gal tank arranged for it, and the butikoferi you're considering is still tiny (2-4 inches), then 30gal might work until it obviously outgrows that. If you only have a 30gal tank, then please don't consider purchasing this fish.

I thought Tilapia was a food fish- I think it might get very big. I had Tilapia at a resturant. It was delicious.
