It is the sizing system. The number indicates the 'band' size, the part that goes around your body. It is determined by measuring just under your breasts. Take this measurement, add 5, and if it is odd number round up to the next even size.
Example: Around your bust is 24, add 5 = 29, odd number so band size is 30
23 add 5 = 28, even number so band size is 28
The letter part is the cup size, it is determined by measuring around the fullest part of your breast, this is usually right about above the nipple, take this measurement and subtract your band size. The difference determines your cup size as follows:
Up to 1/2 inch ------ AA
1/2 - 1 1/2 ----------- A
1 1/2 - 2 1/2 --------- B
2 1/2 - 3 1/2 ---------- C
3 1/2 - 4 1/2 ----------- D
Ex: Band size 30, fullest part of bust 31. 31 - 30 = 1, so your cup size is 'A'
Band size 32, fullest part of bust 35. 35 - 32 = 3, so your cup size is 'C'
The measurements can be very tricky to do. You should have your mom or a friend help you. You can also go to a lingerie store, or the lingerie department at an up-scale department store. The people that work their can measure you, and help you pick out a proper fitting bra.

The number is the band size, and the letter is the cup size. The band size is determined by measuring your ribcage just under your boobs, and the cup size is found by measuring around the fullest part of your bust and subtracting the band size from the other measurement. The number of inches after that is the cup size, so like if you measure 32 inches around for your band size and then your bust measurement is 36 inches, you'd be a 32D. The fit specialists at Victoria's Secret or in the Lingerie department at Nordstorm are good at this and would be more than happy to help you out!

The letter is your cup size and is the difference, in inches from your bust size (36") over your chest size (measured right below the bust, which for you is 32")
36, less 32 is 4. or the letter "D"
